Recycled Paper and Wire | 28cm x 28cm x 5cm
Inspired by the wild sea holly (Eryngium maritimum) that grows around the British coastline, this life-sized paper sculpture celebrates one of our most striking coastal plants. I was drawn to its sculptural form, with its spiny leaves and intricate, thistle-like flower heads, each revealing an extraordinary level of detail when viewed up close.
The sculpture has been hand cut from the pages of a reclaimed zoology book and recycled tissue paper. Every flower has been individually shaped, painted with watercolours and carefully bound together with thread before being assembled into the finished piece. By recreating the plant at its true scale, I hope to encourage a closer appreciation of the remarkable species that thrive along our shores.
Why This Species?
Sea holly is a fascinating example of how plants adapt to some of Britain's most challenging environments. Despite its name, it isn't related to the familiar Christmas holly at all. Instead, it belongs to the carrot family, earning its common name from its spiny leaves and its home among the sand dunes.
Built to survive where few other plants can, sea holly develops a deep taproot that anchors it in shifting sand, while its waxy, blue-green leaves help conserve moisture in dry, windswept conditions. As one of the first plants to colonise newly formed dunes, it plays an important role in stabilising the sand and creating the conditions that allow other coastal species to establish. Its resilience and quiet contribution to these fragile ecosystems are just some of the reasons I find it such a compelling plant to study.
Handmade from Reclaimed Paper
Every sculpture begins with careful research, drawing and close observation before being cut entirely by hand from reclaimed papers. I deliberately leave traces of the original paper visible, allowing fragments of a past life to be woven into each piece. By transforming discarded materials into detailed studies of plants and insects, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the stories hidden within it.
Framing
Each piece is displayed in a handmade solid wood frame, made specifically for the sculpture. The timber is carefully selected to complement the work and is lightly oiled to protect it. Every piece arrives ready to hang.
Caring for Your Artwork
To preserve your artwork, display it away from direct sunlight and avoid areas with high humidity or excessive heat, such as bathrooms or directly above radiators. With simple care, your sculpture will be enjoyed for many years.
