The snake's head fritillary is one of Britain's most distinctive wildflowers. I was drawn to its beautifully curved petals and the intricate chequered pattern that makes every flower unique. Recreating those subtle forms in paper proved surprisingly challenging, and it took many attempts before I was happy that the sculpture captured the character of the species.
 
The sculpture is hand made from a reclaimed old letter, with each petal, stamen and leaf individually shaped, painted with watercolours and carefully bound together with thread. Created at life size, it celebrates the extraordinary detail that can be found in even the most familiar wildflowers and invites a closer appreciation of the plants growing around us.
 
Why This Species?
 
The snake's head fritillary is instantly recognisable for its delicate, bell-shaped flowers, each decorated with a remarkable chequerboard pattern in shades of deep purple, pink or occasionally white. Despite their elegant appearance, every part of the plant is poisonous, a reminder that beauty in nature is often paired with surprising adaptations.
 
Once a common sight along the floodplains of the River Thames, these flowers have become increasingly rare. Changes to traditional meadows, agricultural intensification and drainage have caused wild populations to decline dramatically over the last century. Today, the snake's head fritillary is both a symbol of Britain's disappearing wildflower meadows and a reminder of the importance of protecting the habitats that allow such remarkable plants to thrive.
 
Handmade from Reclaimed Paper
 
Every sculpture begins with careful research, drawing and close observation before being cut entirely by hand from reclaimed papers. I deliberately leave traces of the original paper visible, allowing fragments of a past life to be woven into each piece. By transforming discarded materials into detailed studies of plants and insects, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the stories hidden within it.
 
Framing
 
Each piece is displayed in a handmade solid wood frame, made specifically for the sculpture. The timber is carefully selected to complement the work and is lightly oiled to protect it. Every piece arrives ready to hang.
 
Caring for Your Artwork
 
To preserve your artwork, display it away from direct sunlight and avoid areas with high humidity or excessive heat, such as bathrooms or directly above radiators. With simple care, your sculpture will be enjoyed for many years.
