GREAT ORANGE-TIP | 2026

Recycled Paper, Wire and Thread | 22cm x 22cm x 4cm

Inspired by the remarkable diversity of tropical insects, this life-sized sculpture depicts the Great Orange Tip Butterfly. I was captivated by its elegant form and the vivid orange markings that stand out against its delicate wings. Hand cut from the pages of a reclaimed insect book and carefully painted with watercolours, the sculpture celebrates the intricate beauty of a species that many people may never encounter in the wild.

Why This Species?

The greater orange tip butterfly fascinated me because of the remarkable ways it has adapted to survive. When its wings are closed, the underside perfectly resembles a dead leaf, providing exceptional camouflage against predators. Even its caterpillars rely on disguise, with markings that mimic the head of a vine snake to discourage would-be attackers. Adult butterflies also have a powerful chemical defence, making them an unpleasant meal for predators.

Unlike the familiar orange tip butterflies found in UK hedgerows each spring, the greater orange tip inhabits tropical forests and grasslands across Asia. Its striking colours, unusual behaviours and ingenious survival strategies make it a wonderful example of the extraordinary diversity found within the natural world.

Handmade from Reclaimed Paper

Every sculpture begins with careful research, drawing and close observation before being cut entirely by hand from reclaimed papers. I deliberately leave traces of the original paper visible, allowing fragments of a past life to be woven into each piece. By transforming discarded materials into detailed studies of plants and insects, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the stories hidden within it.

Framing

Each piece is displayed in a handmade solid wood frame, made specifically for the sculpture. The timber is carefully selected to complement the work and is lightly oiled to protect it. Every piece arrives ready to hang.

Caring for Your Artwork

To preserve your artwork, display it away from direct sunlight and avoid areas with high humidity or excessive heat, such as bathrooms or directly above radiators. With simple care, your sculpture will be enjoyed for many years.
