Recycled Paper and Wire | 32cm x 32cm x 4cm
Inspired by the treasures left behind by the tide, this life-sized collection brings together paper shells, seaweed and a mermaid's purse, all hand sculpted from reclaimed tissue paper and old letters. As a child, I was always fascinated by mermaid's purses. They didn't seem quite like a plant or an animal, and I would often wonder what they were. It wasn't until I was an adult that I discovered they are the egg cases of sharks and skates, making them feel even more remarkable.
Each element has been individually shaped and assembled to celebrate the subtle beauty of these familiar coastal discoveries. Together, they capture the sense of curiosity and wonder that comes from exploring Britain's beaches and looking a little more closely at what the tide leaves behind.
Why This Collection?
The British coastline is filled with small discoveries that often go unnoticed, yet each one has its own story to tell. From the delicate forms of shells and seaweed to the remarkable egg cases of sharks and skates, these everyday beach finds reveal just how much life exists beneath the surface of the sea.
This piece forms part of a larger collection inspired by the UK coastline and the memories it creates. For me, these objects recall childhood days spent searching rock pools and collecting treasures along the shore. By recreating them in reclaimed paper, I hope to encourage others to pause, look more closely and rediscover the sense of wonder that can be found in the natural world, often in the most unexpected places.
Handmade from Reclaimed Paper
Every sculpture begins with careful research, drawing and close observation before being cut entirely by hand from reclaimed papers. I deliberately leave traces of the original paper visible, allowing fragments of a past life to be woven into each piece. By transforming discarded materials into detailed studies of plants and insects, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the stories hidden within it.
Framing
Each piece is displayed in a handmade solid wood frame, made specifically for the sculpture. The timber is carefully selected to complement the work and is lightly oiled to protect it. Every piece arrives ready to hang.
Caring for Your Artwork
To preserve your artwork, display it away from direct sunlight and avoid areas with high humidity or excessive heat, such as bathrooms or directly above radiators. With simple care, your sculpture will be enjoyed for many years.
