This life-sized study of a metallic stag beetle was inspired by the remarkable forms I discovered while researching tropical beetles. I was immediately drawn to its sculptural silhouette and the striking metallic sheen of its armour-like body. Hand cut from reclaimed brown paper bags, shaped with wire and delicately painted with watercolours, the sculpture explores the quiet beauty of a powerful insect.
 
Why This Species?
 
The Metallic stag beetle (Cyclommatus metallifer) is a stunning insect, native to Indonesia. It is well known for it's huge horns (called mandibles) which in males can be twice the length of their body. They can be found in a variety of colours but are always shiny and metallic looking.
 
Handmade from Reclaimed Paper
 
Every sculpture begins with careful research, drawing and close observation before being cut entirely by hand from reclaimed papers. I deliberately leave traces of the original paper visible, allowing fragments of a past life to be woven into each piece. By transforming discarded materials into detailed studies of plants and insects, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the stories hidden within it.
 
Framing
 
Each piece is displayed in a handmade solid wood frame, made specifically for the sculpture. The timber is carefully selected to complement the work and is lightly oiled to protect it. Every piece arrives ready to hang.
 
Caring for Your Artwork
 
To preserve your artwork, display it away from direct sunlight and avoid areas with high humidity or excessive heat, such as bathrooms or directly above radiators. With simple care, your sculpture will be enjoyed for many years.
